The Global Environment Facility Small Grants Programme (Gef Sgp). Country Programme Strategy for Antigua & Barbuda(Op6)

January 7, 2019

The Global Environment Facility (GEF) Small Grants Programme (SGP) provides non-governmental and community-based organizations (NGOs/CBOs) in developing countries with grants to enable them to tackle global environmental challenges while addressing local sustainable development needs Since its establishment in 1992,  it has funded thousands of  projects globally providing financial  and technical support in the five GEF Focal Areas: Biodiversity Conservation, Climate Change Mitigation, Protection of International Waters, and Prevention of Land Degradation and Elimination of Persistent Organic Pollutants Antigua and Barbuda became a part of the programme in 1994 as part of the Barbados and the OECS GEF SGP UNDP sub-regional programme. The SGP country programme for Antigua & Barbuda under GEF6 will be heavily aligned to the Government’s recent submission of its Intentional Nationally Determined Commitments (INDCs) to the UNFCCC and meeting the targets for the Convention on Biodiversity. The outcomes of the NGO consultations highlighted and prioritized increased Renewable Energy uptake, drought adaptation, public education, awareness and information sharing as the key areas for action by SGP. Given the increased vulnerability of the Island to climate change impacts, and in light of the country’s ongoing three-year drought, efforts will be placed on building the resilience of communities through projects focused on adaptation and mitigation. In addition SGP will strengthen and support, wide outreach in public education and awareness initiatives to provide critical information and knowledge on the Environmental Protection and Management Bill.
