British Virgin Island: Integration of Disaster Risk Management into the Development Agenda

June 10, 2015

The British Virgin Islands have developed the National Organization from Disasters based on the integration of disaster risk management into the development agenda. This implies important legal and institutional communications and physical infrastructure for preparedness and response. The publication provides lessons on the value of a strong visionary leadership, building institutional and human capacities and the activation of an appropriate policy and legislative platform.

In September 2005 it was prepared Case Study of Practice British Virgin Islands. It was developed by a multidisciplinary team of environmental risk management initiative for Risk Management in the Caribbean, UNDP. Using an integrated approach structured interviews within the country, review, analysis and interpretation of documents, the team was able to develop a model of best practice that integrates risk management to the development agenda of the country.
