Access to HIV Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) for key and vulnerable populations in the English-speaking Caribbean: UNDP HIV, Health and Development Regional Hub for Latin America and the Caribbean

November 30, 2022

In December 2020 following a an inter-agency assessment on HIV prevention in LAC, co-hosted with the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), UNDP initiated this study to examine PEP's availability, accessibility, and acceptability and expand PEP access among key and vulnerable populations as part of combination HIV prevention in the English-speaking Caribbean.

These groups include men who have sex with men, people who use drugs, sex workers, transgender persons, and sexual assault survivors. This study employed qualitative research methods involving a desk review of HIV National Strategic Plans and treatment guidelines and in-depth interviews and focus group discussions with more than 55 stakeholders. Stakeholders included National AIDS Program Coordinators, HIV doctors, and members of civil society organizations (CSOs) and community groups representing key and vulnerable populations. This study experienced limitations due to COVID-19-related restrictions and strained program capacities and the eruption of the La Soufrière volcano in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.
