"From Hashtags to Action: Youth, Democracy, and Decision-Making in the Digital Age” will explore how online activism, social media engagement, and digital organizing are redefining civic participation across the Caribbean.

With youth increasingly using digital tools to voice concerns, mobilize communities, and influence policy, the session will examine how institutions can adapt to this evolving landscape and foster inclusive decision-making. However, while digitalization is a powerful enabler of civic engagement and innovation, the UNDP Human Development Report also highlights its dual nature—as a potential risk to sustainable development. Issues such as digital exclusion, misinformation, and surveillance can exacerbate inequalities and undermine democratic processes. This is particularly relevant in the Caribbean, where disparities in digital access and literacy persist, and where the digital divide can reinforce existing social and economic vulnerabilities.

Aligned with the vision of the Pact for the Future, which calls for renewed global solidarity and inclusive multilateralism, placing youth at the center of sustainable development and decision-making, the United Nations recognizes young people not only as beneficiaries but as essential agents of change, whose voices and leadership are critical to shaping equitable and resilient societies.
