UNLOCKING WOMEN’S ECONOMIC POWER: ADDRESSING BARRIERS AND EXPANDING LIVELIHOOD PATHWAYS IN LAMBUSSIE AND WEST GONJA DISTRICTS

March 10, 2025

Entrepreneurship and vocational skills are vital for economic growth and poverty reduction in Ghana, where MSMEs account for over 90% of businesses and 60% of GDP. However, informal sector challenges—such as limited resources and access to training—hinder growth, especially among youth and women. With youth unemployment in Northern Ghana at 36%, and over 20% of young people lacking education, employment, or training, the situation is critical. Women, particularly in rural areas, face additional barriers due to gender biases and limited access to land, finance, and technology—issues worsened by climate change. This study examines women’s livelihoods in Lambussie and West Gonja Districts, focusing on income sources, vocational interests, and barriers to economic participation to identify pathways for financial empowerment.
