Policy Brief : Investment Case for Improved Ambient Air Quality and Health in Ghana

June 30, 2026

The Policy Brief on the Investment Case for Improved Ambient Air Quality and Health in Ghana presents the key findings and recommendations from UNDP's investment case, providing policymakers and stakeholders with concise, evidence-based guidance to tackle ambient air pollution. It highlights the significant health and economic costs of poor air quality while identifying practical actions that can improve public health and support sustainable development.

The brief estimates that ambient air pollution contributes to more than 12,870 deaths and over 316,800 cases of disease annually in Ghana, resulting in approximately US$1.9 billion (GHS 28 billion) in economic losses each year. It also demonstrates that scaling up interventions such as improved waste management, cleaner transport and sustainable agricultural practices could prevent more than 107,000 cases of illness and nearly 5,000 deaths between 2025 and 2055.

To accelerate progress, the policy brief recommends strengthening national clean air policies, improving cross-sector coordination, expanding air quality monitoring, mobilizing sustainable financing, and increasing public awareness. It also calls for greater investment in cleaner transport, waste management and industrial practices to help Ghana achieve healthier communities and more resilient, sustainable development.
