AN ASSESSMENT ON LEVELS OF WOMEN AND YOUTH PARTICIPATION IN LOCAL GOVERNANCE AND PEACE-BUILDING PROCESSES IN SELECTED DISTRICTS IN NORTHERN GHANA
June 13, 2025
Despite Ghana’s strides in democratic practices, the representation of women and youth in political and peace-building spheres remain low. While the country has committed to international frameworks such as the Beijing Platform for Action, the CEDAW, UN Security Council Resolution 1325 (Women, Peace, and Security), and Resolution 2250 (Youth, Peace, and Security), the practical inclusion of these groups in local governance decision-making and peace-building processes is still fraught with challenges. Persistent social, political, economic, and cultural barriers continue to hinder the effective participation of women and youth, underscoring the need for targeted initiatives to address these inequalities and drivers of exclusion and to enhance their roles at national and subnational levels.
