Financing Ghana's Biodiversity for a Sustainable Future
The BIOFIN Ghana project equips the country with the tools, knowledge, and institutional capacity needed to close the biodiversity financing gap. Through national policy reviews, expenditure assessments, financial needs costing, and the development of a comprehensive national biodiversity finance plan, the project is building a sound foundation for Ghana to implement its Global Biodiversity Framework commitments — ensuring that nature is valued, protected, and sustainably financed for generations to come.
The global annual biodiversity financing gap stands at an estimated US$700 billion. Closing this gap requires transformative change across economies and societies — including detailed assessments of policy contexts, biodiversity expenditure reviews, and the development of comprehensive national finance plans. Building on UNDP's globally proven Biodiversity Finance Initiative (BIOFIN) methodology, this project supports Ghana in establishing a transformative process for biodiversity finance — bringing together Ministries of Finance and Environment, the private sector, civil society, and financial institutions through a socially and gender-inclusive approach to implement the Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF).
