ANALYS OF EXTREME POVERTY AND ITS DETERMINANTS, INEQUALITY AND VULNERABILITY IN CÔTE D’IVOIRE

The aim of this study is to establish a disaggregated profile of extremely poor individuals in Côte d'Ivoire and to understand the determinants involved, to analyse the vulnerability of individuals and inequalities that exist, as well to analyse the resilience of households to shocks of various kinds. To this end, a series of statistical and econometric analyses were carried out on data from the Harmonized Survey on Households Living Standards (2018 EHCVM) and the post COVID-19 Household Living Conditions Monitoring Surveys.
As a reminder, according to the 2018 EHCVM, the monetary poverty rate stands at 39.4% with a poverty threshold of 345,520 CFA Francs per year and per capita.
According to the 1st decile of consumption expenditure (199,757 CFA francs per person per year, or 548 CFA francs per person per day), extreme poverty affected around 2.55 million people in Côte d'Ivoire in 2018. With the highest prevalence being noted in rural areas, heavily concentrated in the centre-west of the country, particularly in the Tonkpi, Haut-Sassandra and Marahoué regions, and to the north in Tchologo region.
