We are working with Pemba Municipality on innovations for erosion mapping, co-creation and design of solutions.
Mozambique’s UNDP Accelerator Lab is part of the second cohort of 32 Accelerator Labs that started operation in 2020, officially launching on July 23, 2021. It will advance progress on two main challenges: solid waste management and urban soil erosion. The Lab is proposing to explore a blended methodology using ethnographic techniques to better observe the patterns of behavior, values and areas of potential change present in the community, combined with collective intelligence methodologies such as citizen science, participatory mapping approaches and digital surveys. The Lab will partner with relevant national and local actors, such as the Municipality of Pemba, Catholic University of Mozambique, UniLurio University and local NGOs to map not only the waste value chain, but also the extent and causes of soil erosion, to support the municipality and local authorities in finding sustainable solutions. The laboratory is also developing other initiatives with the country office, in the programmatic areas of blue economy and youth employability and livelihood.
