UNDP commends Belize on the approval of the Revised 2024-2030 National Gender Policy
April 3, 2024
Belmopan City, Belize, 3 April 2024 – The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) commends Belize’s Cabinet on the approval of the Revised 2024-2030 National Gender Policy.
With technical support from UNDP and implementing partners, the initiative to revise the 2013 policy was part of a global programme aimed at eliminating all forms of violence against women and girls.
Thus, the Revised 2024-2030 National Gender Policy's overarching goal is to “Achieve gender equity and equality and end discrimination against women and girls in Belize.” Aligning with the United Nations 2030 Agenda, the policy contributes to the achievement goals, the Sustainable Development Goals specifically SDG 5 on gender equality and equity.
However, achieving gender equity and equality requires the government, civil society, and private sectors to join forces in partnering and collaborating. Through the revision process of the policy, Belize was able to accomplish and develop a cross-sectoral policy that takes a multi-sectoral approach.
The policy focuses on four main strategies cutting across priority areas:
- Creating and enforcing supportive laws;
- Delivering gender-responsive services;
- Providing equitable access to resources and;
- Fostering increased participation and inclusion.
UNDP remains committed to supporting the Government of Belize, the National Women’s Commission, stakeholders and partners, and the people of Belize in the effective implementation of the Revised 2024-2030 National Gender Policy.
