The fifth annual report on the cooperation between the United Nations and the European Union, issued 2010 and entitled “Improving Lives”, captures the continued deepening and broadening of the relationship between the two institutions.
It looks at some of the results that were achieved on the ground and in policy discussions during 2009. The report also offers an important opportunity to take stock of the evolution of the partnership. The collaboration between the two institutions encompasses all the core areas of the United Nations’ work.
In 2009, the total financial support granted by the EU to the UN Funds, Programs and specialized Agencies was over € 1,496 million.
That year, top 10 countries to receive EU funding to UN activities were: Afghanistan, Occupied Palestinian Territory, Sudan, Pakistan, Myanmar, Somalia, Bangladesh, Chad, Nigeria and DRC.
Some key results of the UN-EU partnership in 2009
- People in over 60 countries suffering from natural disasters or conflict benefitted from life-serving interventions (food, shelter, water, emergency health, education and protection).
- Over 150 million square meters of land cleared from mines and 4,000 tons of small arms and light weapons destroyed.
- Almost 14 million people in over 50 countries supported with food.
- Over 8 million children were vaccinated against measles, meningitis and other preventable diseases.
- 2.2 million children provided with education.
- Electoral cycles of 22 countries strengthened and 88 million votes cast in 8 countries for elections held between December 2008 and December 2009.
- 22 countries supported to integrate poverty and environment linkages into planning and development strategies.
