January 22, 2024

Fawaz Mohammed Hashim, a 32-year-old from Maqatarh, Taiz Governorate, faced immense challenges due to the ongoing conflict in Yemen. Unable to hear or speak, Fawaz is an individual with special needs who found it even more difficult to access basic necessities like medical assistance and food for his family. However, his unwavering determination, coupled with the support of ERRY III joint programme FFA (Food Assistance for Assets) project, implemented with local partner SMEPS, transformed his life and brought hope to his community.

"Fawaz's journey has been nothing short of remarkable. As his uncle, I have witnessed his struggles and the immense hardships our family faced during the conflict. But through the Food Assistance for Assets activity, Fawaz found a glimmer of hope. Though he cannot express it himself, I can see the joy and gratitude in his eyes," said Fawaz's uncle.

According to Fawaz's uncle, he is the sole son of his parents, with three sisters. The loss of his father's job during the war exacerbated their financial struggles. It was during these trying times that Fawaz became a participant in the Food for Assets Project, joining 36 men and 24 women from his village in a road rehabilitation project that lasted four months.

"The road rehabilitation project has been a turning point for Fawaz and our entire village. With each brick laid, he felt a sense of purpose and accomplishment. The road that once was in disrepair now stands as a symbol of resilience and unity. It not only connects us physically but also instills a sense of hope in our hearts," his uncle explained.

Through the project, Fawaz and his fellow participants worked tirelessly to improve the village's road, which would serve as a vital lifeline for the community. The road not only ensured better access to water, health, nutrition and transportation but also facilitated the delivery of essential supplies, including food, to the village. With the support of the European Union and the Government of Sweden, , community members witnessed their road being paved, marking a significant step towards a brighter future.

Fawaz, along with 78 other villagers, played an instrumental role in this construction. As FFA participants, they received cash transfers for a period of four months, ensuring that they could provide for their households, consisting of a total of 721 people.

"This programme not only provided immediate financial support but also equipped Fawaz with new skills that would empower him to generate a sustainable income for himself and his family. Seeing him gain confidence and acquiring knowledge that will sustain him and his family fills my heart with pride," expressed Fawaz's uncle.

The success of Fawaz's journey was made possible by the collaborative efforts of four UN agencies: United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and World Food Programme (WFP) Food, Agriculture Organization (FAO) & International Labour Organization (ILO)

Looking ahead, it is evident that the continued dedication and perseverance of individuals with special needs, like Fawaz, will be vital in creating a brighter future for Yemen. Together, through collaboration and support, we can ensure that no one, regardless of their abilities, is left behind.
