MUN-Liberia 2026 Calls on Youth to Turn Global Ideas into Local Action
August 21, 2026
The 6th Model United Nations Liberia (MUN- Liberia) conference
The 6th Model United Nations Liberia (MUN- Liberia) conference was held under the theme “Global Citizens, Local Impact: Action and Innovation for a Sustainable Future”. The conference brought together young leaders from across the country to engage in diplomatic simulations, policy debates, and leadership development. The theme underscores the critical role of youth in driving sustainable development while addressing global challenges at the community level.
Speaking at the opening of the conference, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Resident Representative, Mr. Aliou Mamadou Dia, urged young delegates to transform dialogue into tangible local action. Dia challenged the assembly to move beyond simulated diplomacy. “A global citizen understands that the world’s problems are not somebody else’s problems,” he stated. “Every global challenge arrives somewhere locally, in a community, a school and that is where leadership is ultimately tested.”
Participants served as delegates representing countries such as Liberia, Guinea, Senegal, Zambia, Sierra Leone, The Gambia, Ghana, and Nigeria among others.
Dia framed youth investment as core development strategy, citing UNDP backed initiatives including the National Cadet Programme, which saw two-thirds of its 2022 cohort secure employment, and the Eco-Brigade initiative, which engaged 180 youth in environmental conservation across three counties. He noted that while Africa is advancing on 12 of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), current pace falls short of the 2030 target.
The conference aligns with the United Nations SDGs, with a special focus on SDG 4 and 5 – Quality Education and Gender Equality respectively, two pillars essential to Liberia’s long-term development. Through committee sessions and collaborative projects, delegates will explore actionable solutions that bridge global frameworks with local realities.
MUN-Liberia is a non-profit, non-governmental initiative established in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic. The organization is dedicated to educating and empowering youth about global politics and international relations, while fostering meaningful partnerships with local, regional, and international entities.
Heads of the MUN-Liberia Conference charged delegates to remain optimistic as they prepare to model the UN and lauded UNDP and the UN Resident Coordinator for their continued support.
The 6th MUN-Liberia Conference represents a significant milestone in the organization’s annual flagship event, reinforcing its commitment to nurturing the next generation of Liberian diplomats, advocates, and changemakers.
