The Government of Liberia, with support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), has launched a landmark Artificial Intelligence (AI) Training Programme for technical officials from ministries and public institutions nationwide.

This initiative marks one of Liberia’s first structured national efforts to build AI capacity within the public sector.

The training introduces government professionals to emerging opportunities in the quickly changing digital landscape, including better service delivery, data-based decision-making, and institutional modernization.

Opening the session, UNDP Liberia Resident Representative, Mr. Aliou Dia, emphasized that Liberia is entering a new digital era driven by strong political will and a growing commitment to innovation.

“This training is more than a technical exercise; it represents the foundation of a new development pathway for Liberia,” Mr. Dia said. “AI will strengthen institutions, enhance service delivery, and support evidence-based decision-making that improves lives.”

The Director General of the Cabinet, Mr. Nathaniel T. Kwabo, highlighted the Government’s focus on building an inclusive, forward-looking digital ecosystem.

“With over 60% of Liberia’s population under the age of 35, equipping young people with digital skills is central to national development,” Mr. Kwabo noted. “A digitally empowered public sector is essential for achieving the country’s transformation goals.”

Deputy Minister of Posts and Telecommunications, S. Mohammed Massaley, expressed appreciation to UNDP for advancing AI training in Liberia and strengthening national digital capacity.

He reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to ongoing and future AI and digitalization efforts, stressing that collaboration with UNDP and other partners is vital for building a modern, efficient, and technology-driven public sector.

The AI Training Programme is led by experts from UNDP’s Chief Digital Office in New York and regional offices, bringing global technical expertise and diverse perspectives to support Liberia’s digital transformation agenda. Strategic partners from across Africa and the international technology community also participated, demonstrating broad support for Liberia’s growing AI ambitions.

UNDP is supporting Liberia through several key digital initiatives, including:

  • Establishing a master’s Programme in Artificial Intelligence and Cybersecurity at the University of Liberia.

  • Scaling digital and AI skills training for youth, targeting 50,000 young people.

  • Strengthening cybersecurity readiness and building resilient digital governance systems.

  • Supporting the digitalization of Cabinet processes and public-sector workflows.

Mr. Dia further noted that global experts are increasingly expressing interest in contributing to Liberia’s evolving digital development efforts, reflecting rising international confidence in the country’s direction and potential.

The Government of Liberia and UNDP emphasized that all AI-driven solutions must be inclusive, responsible, and aligned with the African Union’s Continental AI Strategy to ensure no one is left behind.

The launch of the AI Training Programme marks another important milestone in the collective effort to build a more innovative, efficient, and digitally empowered Liberia.
