Powering Essential Services and Economic Recovery in Yemen
Years of conflict have severely impacted Yemen’s infrastructure, public services, and economic activity. Through its partnership with the Kuwait Fund, UNDP is supporting Yemen’s recovery by expanding access to renewable energy, strengthening essential health services, and improving critical maritime infrastructure that serves as a lifeline for humanitarian assistance and trade.
Renewable Energy Improves Access to Health Services and Livelihood Opportunities (HEAL)

Reliable access to electricity remains one of the most pressing challenges facing communities across Yemen. The HEAL project harnessed renewable energy solutions to strengthen essential services while creating economic opportunities for local communities.
Key Components
Renewable Energy for Healthcare
UNDP restored reliable electricity in four hospitals through solar-powered energy systems, helping ensure uninterrupted delivery of essential health services for approximately 205,000 people.
Solar-Powered Livelihoods
The project established 39 solar-powered microgrids that provide clean and affordable energy to commercial areas, helping small businesses operate more reliably and supporting local economic activity.
Building Local Capacity
Community-based committees were established to support the management and maintenance of energy infrastructure, while youth and women received training in entrepreneurship and solar system management, helping create new income opportunities.

Enhancing Capacities of the Ports of Aden and Mukalla

The Ports of Aden and Mukalla serve as critical gateways for humanitarian supplies, food imports, and commercial trade. Years of conflict and underinvestment have reduced their operational capacity, increasing costs and delays that affect communities across Yemen. UNDP is supporting the rehabilitation of key infrastructure and strengthening port operations to improve efficiency, reliability, and humanitarian access.
Key Components
Rehabilitating Critical Port Infrastructure
The project supports the reconstruction of the Marine Maintenance Workshop at the Port of Aden, improving maintenance capacity and helping ensure the long-term sustainability of port operations.
Modernizing Port Operations
UNDP is supporting the procurement of a new mooring boat, movable maintenance workshops, spare parts, and equipment needed to maintain operational continuity and reduce downtime.
Strengthening Maritime Services
The project includes the rehabilitation of a tugboat at Mukalla Port, maintenance of critical slipway infrastructure, and capacity development in hydrographic surveying to improve navigation safety and operational efficiency.
