Beat the Plastic” UNDP Kuwait Celebrates World Environmental Day

Press Conference

Kuwait - United Nations House, 5 June World Environment Day is UN's most important day when global awareness and action for the protection of our environment is widely pronoted.

Since it began in 1974, WED has become a global platform for public outreach that is widely celebrated in over 100 countries. Each World Environment Day is organized around a theme that focuses attention on a particularly pressing environmental concern. The theme for 2018 is on beating plastic pollution. Tons of plastic debris, which by definition is waste that varies in size from large containers, fishing nets to microscopic plastic pellets or even particles, is discarded every year everywhere, polluting lands, rivers, coastlines, beaches and oceans. In Kuwait, beach littering with plastic is a major issue facing the marine environment.  Tons of plastic are often removed in concerted efforts to organize beach clean ups.

Press Conference details:

World Environment Day (WED): This year continues the global Earth Day call to “Beat Plastic Pollution” and reduce our reliance on single-use plastics. This year’s #WED2018 slogan is “If you can’t reuse it, refuse it”. UNDP organized a press conference inviting the media to highlight some of the environmental issues/challenges that Kuwait faces and to share the recommended solutions to raise awareness of the pressing concerns of plastic pollution.

Event at the Scientific Center

With the support of the Scientific Center and KEPA, the UNDP organized an event to highlight the impact of plastic pollution on the marine environment. Members of the public, the civil societies and companies were invited to participate and  pledge to cut out single use plastic in their daily lives. The event is registered in the global map of events.
