This report examines how the Nature Relationship Index (NRI) can be adapted to Colombia’s distinctive ecological, cultural, and institutional context. Building on the NRI’s three pillars—Nature is Thriving and Accessible, Nature is Used with Care, and Nature is Safeguarded—the study combines conceptual analysis, literature review, expert consultations, and preliminary departmental data to assess the adequacy of the current indicator framework. The analysis identifies gaps in the measurement of ecosystem condition, informal and illegal extraction, environmental contamination, institutional implementation, and the relational and biocultural dimensions of human–nature interactions. Particular attention is given to the limitations of predominantly instrumental approaches to nature valuation in a country where Indigenous, Afro-Colombian, and local governance systems play a central role in environmental stewardship. The report proposes a set of indicator adjustments covering ecosystem integrity, accessibility, extraction pressures, pollution, enforcement capacity, and legal effectiveness, alongside five biocultural indicators capturing collective stewardship, cultural waterway health, governance alignment, Indigenous language vitality, and traditional food systems. The proposed adaptation positions the NRI as a complementary tool for human development measurement and as a territorially differentiated instrument for environmental and development policy in Colombia.
