SDG 16: Support to measuring, monitoring and reporting of Sustainable Development Goal 16
UNDP has been active over the years in supporting the development of governance indicators. UNDP's Oslo Governance Centre (OGC) continues to play a key role in the development of the SDG 16 global monitoring framework, in particular, data collection at the global level.
The Centre is involved in the following key initiatives:
1) Convening and facilitating a Virtual Network for discussions and exchanges on strengthening SDG 16 indicators – at the global and national level, in collaboration with other partners. The network brings together various experts and stakeholders, including development practitioners, statisticians, UN agencies and civil society organizations to explore existing indicators and internationally agreed instruments for measuring Goal 16.
2) Engaging UN and international actors working on issues related to Goal 16 implementation, measurement, monitoring and reporting.
OGC supports the Praia City Group on Governance Statistics, which is made up of UN Member States national statistics offices and participates in its annual meetings. OGC is also chairing the Praia working groups’ inputs to the Inter-agency Expert Group on relevant SDG 16 indicators.
The Praia City Group, will continue to be a key actor in advising the UN Statistical Commission on its work in finalising the official SDG 16 global monitoring framework. UNDP's Oslo Governance Centre is an active partner to the group in these processes.
3) Country readiness for monitoring SDG 16
Through its active engagement and support, OGC is contributing to pilot countries developing frameworks and systems for producing data to report on Goal 16 related indicators. This is being done in partnership with civil society and intergovernmental processes, integrating global governance data initiatives and employing innovative methods for presenting governance data for national stakeholders.
To supplement and complement the official data that is being produced by government and state bodies, these pilot initiatives will also integrate other governance related monitoring initiatives – for example, the governance data that countries use within the Open Government Partnership initiative and others.
The UNDP OGC has recently faciliated the launch of a one - stop practitioner driven portal on SDG16 called the SDG16 Hub. This portal is intended for anyone interested in getting knowledge and information on SDG16 as well to engage with others. It is available at: www.sdg16hub.org
