“We struggled with hygiene and sanitation because water was scarce. The building was not lit at night, and electricity was not consistent. Also, the center had insufficient space for patient accommodation, inadequate maternity services, and a critical shortage of medical equipment across all departments. The hospital building itself was old, deteriorating, and had no fence.” Mrs. Mokwe Marie, Chief of Post, Buea Town Integrated Health Center.
This health center, located in the heart of Buea, the capital of the South-West Region, Cameroon, has long been a crucial provider of healthcare services for the over 15,000 residents of the town, many of whom are internally displaced persons (IDPs) due to the crisis in the North-West and South-West regions of Cameroon. The facility was in a state of disrepair, struggling to meet the basic needs of its population amidst the increasing need in the town.
To address these pressing issues, the UNDP Recovery programme, with funding from the Government of Japan, within the framework of the Presidential Plan for the Reconstruction and Development (PPRD) of the North-West and South-West Regions of Cameroon, rehabilitated and equipped the health center to a higher capacity, including a water point for portable water. We ensured a complete overhaul of the existing building, including structural repairs, painting, and tiling; the construction and equipment of a maternity section with laboratory service, a consultation room, a labor and delivery room, a maternity ward, a children’s ward, a minor surgery ward, and modern toilets,” explains Marinus Ebesoh, the project's engineer.

In addition, a fence with a security post was constructed around the facility to enhance security, a solar energy plant was installed to ensure a reliable source of electricity, and a water tower with two 5,000-liter tanks was constructed to address the water scarcity challenge. These actions have impacted the services of the health center and the community profoundly.
“We now have a clean and safe environment to care for our patients. This has significantly improved the quality of services we provide, significantly impacting the number of patients visiting the facility, with an increase of over 50%, including pregnant women. The improved environment has not only enhanced patient satisfaction but has also boosted the morale of the staff towards a scaled-up delivery of quality services.” Mrs. Mokwe Marie confirms happily.
“Before now, I was always worried about coming here. The building didn’t look appealing, the services were limited, and there was limited running water or light. But now, I feel comfortable. The care I receive here is much better, and I’m confident that my baby and I are safe.” Ms. Martha Ngome, a postpartum mother, at the center.

In addition to the Buea Town Integrated Health Center, the project has rehabilitated and equipped eighteen other health centers in Fako Division over the two phases of the project. Also, twenty-two water points, some of them solar-powered, have been constructed in other communities to improve access to safe drinking water.
“We achieved these results thanks to a strong partnership between the Government of Cameroon, the Government of Japan, UNDP, and other key partners, which has been instrumental in addressing the significant health and portable water needs of affected communities in the South-West Region. However, there are still over 20 critically affected communities in need in the affected regions of the South-West and North-West. With the availability of more resources, we will extend our actions.” Ahmed Ndjama Abouem, National Coordinator, Recovery Programme, UNDP Cameroon.
