UNDP in Cameroon

Gender Equality and Women Empowerment

UNDP Cameroon has contributed to gender equality in its area of intervention focused on transformative, inclusive and sustainable growth by relying on the country programme document (CPD) 2022-2026. This document aligns with the UNDP strategic plan 2021-2025 and the gender equality strategy 2022-2025, which aim to accelerate progress towards the sustainable development goals (SDGs) and strengthen resilience to crises and shocks. UNDP Cameroon guided by its country office gender strategy has implemented initiatives to promote women's economic empowerment, to enhance their participation in inclusive governance and peacebuilding, and reduce gender inequalities and discrimination in the areas of environment, natural resources and climate change. Some of achievements include:

- Supporting women entrepreneurs in developing innovative technologies, especially in the sectors of green energy, sustainable agriculture and circular economy.

- Strengthening the capacities of women leaders and women's organizations to influence public policies, prevent and resolve conflicts, and promote social cohesion in crisis-affected areas.

- Combating all forms of gender-based violence, including female genital mutilation, early and forced marriage, and sexual and gender-based violence.

- Promoting equal opportunities and access to essential services for women and girls, especially in education, health, water and sanitation.

- Raising awareness and advocating for gender mainstreaming in natural resource management, disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation.

UNDP Cameroon continues to work with the government, development partners, other UN agencies, civil society and local communities to achieve gender equality and women empowerment development priorities through three strategic pillars: Transformative, inclusive and sustainable growth; Inclusive governance and peacebuilding; Environmental sustainability and climate disaster risk management.
