4th Botswana National Human Development Report (NHDR): Youth Employment

June 2, 2025

Human development is about expanding people's opportunities and choices, enabling long, healthy, and fulfilling lives. Employment plays a central role in advancing human development: it is a precondition for people to utilize their skills, earn livelihoods, and contribute to society. Employment ensures that capabilities are matched with chances for growth, reducing frustration, and maximizing human potential. It also contributes to human development outcomes by providing economic security, fostering social inclusion, and providing access to education, healthcare, and housing. Decent work enhances dignity and self-worth, allowing people to invest in their families and communities while reducing poverty and vulnerability.
The availability of employment determines young people’s future pathways, aspirations, and professional and personal development. It also strengthens their willingness to abide by the social contract. For these reasons, and because youth employment is very high on the national policy agenda at present, it is the topic of Botswana’s National Human Development Report.
