February 16, 2024

15 February 2024, Addis Ababa – Yesterday, on the margins of the African Union Summit, the Africa Borderlands Centre proudly celebrated the launch of the 'Borderlands' documentary series, a dynamic visual narrative that highlights the vibrant cultures, pressing challenges, and untapped opportunities within Africa's borderland regions. The event marked a pivotal moment in spotlighting the stories of Africa’s borderlands on both a global and continental stage.

Designed to bring to light the distinct dynamics of border regions across the African continent, the 'Borderlands' documentary series delves into the rich cultural diversity and significant socio-economic potential of these areas. Despite facing unique challenges, the series through its engaging storytelling and on-the-ground narratives, illuminates the lives, resilience, and possibilities that dwell within these diverse communities.

The premiere attracted dignitaries, policymakers, development practitioners, and representatives from various sectors, including the Director for UNDP Regional Service Centre for Africa, Matthias Naab. Their attendance emphasized the documentary's critical role in deepening understanding and driving commitment to support and empower Africa’s borderland communities.

“More than a documentary, 'Borderlands' serves as a catalyst for transformation. It seeks to bring the stories of borderland communities to an international audience, fostering action, influencing policy, and rallying resources for sustainable development” says Zeynu Ummer, Director a.i UNDP Resilience Hub for Africa and Manager of the Africa Borderlands Centre. The series highlights the need for development strategies that are inclusive and mindful of the borderland areas' distinct contexts.

Following the launch, the Africa Borderlands Centre reiterates its call to action for all stakeholders—governments, international bodies, civil society, and the private sector—to unite in efforts to transform Africa’s borderlands into regions of prosperity, peace, and stability. The 'Borderlands' series stands as a vital step toward realizing this vision, offering a foundation for dialogue, cooperation, and innovation.
