Since 2022, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Tanzania embarked on a transformative journey to create a diverse range of initiatives aimed at empowering the youth. This led to the design of a portfolio named 'Unleashing Youth as Drivers of National Development.' The portfolio's primary goal is to ensure integration of youth into the country's economic, political, and social spheres, utilizing dynamic methodologies that promise impacts beyond conventional programmatic methods, evoking great excitement.

Tanzania's population is predominantly young, with over 50% of its people under 18 and 77% under 35. As the economic landscape continues to evolve, the youth are becoming increasingly crucial in shaping the country's economic future. Young Tanzanians are at the forefront of digital transformation and innovation, adopting novel strategies in agriculture, and leading in various service industries. Their unique perspectives and practices are fundamental to Tanzania's competitiveness and growth. However, the labor market struggles to accommodate the nearly 1 million young Tanzanians entering it each year, with only about 340,000 new job openings annually. This discrepancy contributes to rising rates of unemployment and underemployment, leading to an increase in poverty and socioeconomic disparity. Moreover, it breeds feelings of disillusionment and disengagement, significantly affecting the societal fabric.

The 'Unleashing Youth as Drivers of National Development' portfolio envisions youth as catalysts for sustainable economic growth that fosters inclusive opportunities. Its objective is to engage youth meaningfully in decision-making processes at both national and subnational levels, thereby enabling them to take control of their lives and future. Furthermore, the portfolio recognizes the entrepreneurial spirit, resilience, and leadership potential in youth, regardless of their diverse backgrounds, positioning them to generate and capitalize on opportunities.
