Hurricane IOTA passed through the coasts of the archipelago of San Andrés, Providencia and Santa Catalina on November 16, 2020, reaching a category 5 on the Saffir Simpson scale. In its wake, it left completely flooded areas and 98% devastation in homes and commercial establishments, affecting more than 700 families, according to figures provided by the archipelago authorities.  


 

Given this event, the Colombian Government declared a departmental disaster in the archipelago and deployed its response system under the coordination of the National Disaster Risk Management Unit (UNGRD) in coordination with the departmental Government in search of a prompt response. to the crisis caused by the passage of the hurricane.  

UNDP was present from the beginning to support the island's reconstruction. In the first step, aerial photographs of the region were taken with the help of drones, which allowed an analysis of the soils and structures, generating internal and external information that allowed us to be much more precise in a shorter time than traditional ones. topographical diagnoses that would have taken weeks.
