Drones for

Development programme

Project Owner: UNDP Colombia

In response to the devastation caused by Hurricane Fiona in Sabana de la Mar, Hato Mayor, and surrounding areas, the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the Ministry of Housing and Buildings (MIVED) have launched a comprehensive strategy for early recovery and resilience-building.

The strategy aims to address the immediate needs of affected communities while also laying the groundwork for future climate resilience. Utilizing innovative methods such as drone flights with georeferencing technology and surveys, the initiative will gather crucial data on the impacts of the hurricane on homes and livelihoods. This data, collected through the Home and Building Damage Assessment (HBDA) methodology, will provide real-time insights to guide the prioritization of reconstruction efforts. By mapping residential, commercial, and public buildings in Sabana de la Mar, the strategy ensures that government and local authorities have the necessary information to make informed decisions.

The collaboration with the Sabana de la Mar City Council, the government of Hato Mayor, and Civil Defense underscores the collective commitment to the recovery process. Additionally, the support from UNDP offices in Colombia and collaboration with Acceleration Laboratories further enriches the data collection efforts. The visualization and analysis of this data will not only inform reconstruction plans but also contribute to evidence-based decision-making at the national level. With a network of over 90 laboratories worldwide, UNDP is well-equipped to provide innovative solutions for sustainable development challenges. This initiative highlights the organization's longstanding commitment to emergency response and early recovery, underscoring its vital role in building resilient communities and preserving livelihoods in the face of disasters.
