Navigating uncertain times
A World of Worry, a World of Hope
Where we go is up to us
The challenges in the Anthropocene and in sweeping societal transformations are huge, and insecurity and polarization make things worse.
Yet COVID-19 has also shown us we can change if we decide to. The unprecedented action by central banks left their responses to the 2008 financial crisis in the shade. Social protection became ‘possible’ and saved many from the pandemic’s worst socioeconomic effects. It also proved to be a large-scale laboratory for innovation, by expanding benefit coverage to refugees, migrants and informal workers. It galvanized civil society to address underlying social, economic and political injustices.
In this turbulent new era we can set the direction but not guarantee the outcome. The good news is that we have more tools than ever to help us navigate. But no amount of technological wizardry is a substitute for good leadership and collective action.
By unlocking our human potential, by tapping into our creativity and diversity, the Human Development Report challenges us to create a future in which we thrive, today and in the future, and one in which, however uncertain, offers more promise than peril.
