Ha Noi 6 February 2020 - The  Korea - Viet Nam Mine Action project has so far surveyed over 15,000 hectares of land and cleared 3,000 hectares of contaminated areas in Quang Binh & Binh Dinh, providing more land for development projects in these provinces. Meanwhile, a database of 9,500 UXO survivors was created and nearly 80,000 local students and people educated about how to remain safe in the mine-affected environment.  

UNDP Resident Representative in Viet Nam Caitlin Wiesen and KOICA Country Director Jinoh Kim acknowledged these achievements in a meeting today, just before Mr Jinoh Kim acomplished his term in Viet Nam. 

"These are great achievements and working very closely with yourself and your team under your leadership has been so key in different points," Ms. Caitlin Wiesen thanked Mr Jinoh Kim for his commitment and support to Mine Action and Sustainable Development in Viet Nam.

Mr Jinoh Kim appreciated the valuable and strong partnership between UNDP and KOICA, through this Mine Action project.  "The project has a lot of achievements so far, and I hope I will be able to see the remarkable success when this project is over," the KOICA Country Director said.

The ‘Korea-Viet Nam Mine Action Project’ was launched in March 2018 to strengthen the governance and management of national mine action activities, as well as to promote people’s safety and development in areas contaminated with UXO. The project also helps ensure timely support and quality of life for survivors from landmine/ UXO accidents and further reduce future accidents through increasing the awareness in local communities about the potential risk from ERW.
