UNDP and USAID organize a five-day training for women lawyers in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and the Merged Areas

Islamabad, 16 September 2022—UNDP Pakistan, with support from USAID, organized a five-day advanced training for women lawyers of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Bar Council. The key objectives of the training were to enhance skills in legal theory and practice and to empower women lawyers in KP and the Merged Areas.

24 women lawyers from Orakzai, Kurram, South Waziristan, Dera Ismail Khan, Mohmand, Swat, Bajaur and Kohat district attended the training. The training covered the following topics: legal drafting, legal aid, intellectual property rights, taxation, legal research, leadership and client management, and the role of rule of law institutions. 

The training concluded with a certificate award ceremony and it was attended by the chief guests, Mr Muhammad Sarir Khan, Member of the KP Bar Council, and Mr Rana Kaiser Ishaque, Assistant Resident Representative, UNDP Pakistan. 

In his speech, Mr Muhammad Sarir Khan said, “KP Bar Council is taking many initiatives to improve gender equality, and it will continue its efforts in promoting more women to join the legal profession.” He also expressed his thanks to UNDP and USAID for their efforts to empower women lawyers in KP and the Merged Areas.

 

 

UNDP Pakistan’s Assistant Resident Representative, Mr Rana Kaiser Ishaque, expressed his gratitude to USAID and the KP Bar Council for their long-term partnership with UNDP, and underlined, “This work is crucial to making our justice system more equitable and accessible to all because the presence of more women lawyers will encourage more women litigants to seek help from the formal justice sector.” He also thanked the UNDP Rule of Law Programme for its ongoing efforts to support and empower women lawyers in KP and the Merged Areas. 

The UNDP Rule of Law Programme is implementing a range of interventions to strengthen security and justice sector governance in Pakistan.
