Mongolia and UNDP in action

Integrated development solutions driven by country priorities and UNDP’s new Strategic Plan.

Our Strategic Plan 2023-2027 introduces the evolution of #NextGenUNDP into #FutureSmartUNDP. More than a mantra, it is our new benchmark for success in the future of development. Building on UNDP’s 50 years of expertise across 170 countries, this new approach allows us to focus and prioritize where country demands are greatest. By working together in this way, we aim to expand people’s choices for a fairer, sustainable future, with people and planet in balance.

 

Our work

UNDP’s current focus is working towards the following national results and ensuring how our integrated signature solutions – powered by digitalization, innovation and development financing – are accelerating impact and scale in Mongolia: 

  • Diversified, inclusive and green economy 

  • Risk-informed climate adaptation and sustainable management of natural ecosystems, 

  • Women’s empowerment, inclusive and accountable governance, and progress towards achievement of the SDGs

Climate Change

Mongolia is among the countries most impacted by climate change with an observed temperature increase of 2.1C over the past 70 years and its key socioeconomic sectors including agriculture and animal husbandry in addition to the natural ecosystem are adversely affected by the changing climate conditions requiring urgent and timely actions. UNDP in Mongolia has been supporting Government of Mongolia along with our donors and partners in various front to address climate change impacts in the areas of mitigation and adaptation.

Natural resources management and biodiversity

UNDP has been supporting Government of Mongolia and vulnerable rural population to advance ecosystems and biodiversity contributing to Mongolia’s long-term development policy Vision 2050’s green development priorities through integrated land use planning, to ensure that use of land and natural resources is oriented to optimize production without harming ecosystem services or degrading biodiversity; making production practices more environmentally appropriate in the animal husbandry, arable farming and infrastructure development sectors; offering technical support to line ministries and subnational governments to enhance regulatory and legislative frameworks on access to benefit sharing of genetic resources; and developing innovative financing solutions (such as debt-for-nature swaps, biodiversity funds) and other area-based conservation measures.

Effective Governance

Support to the process of democratic consolidation is a key area of cooperation between UNDP and the Government of Mongolia. During earlier years of the country’s transition to democracy, the focus of cooperation was on promoting key concepts of good governance, capacity building of newly established governance institutions, including the Parliament, the National Human Rights Commission, and development the first national human rights programme. As the country gradually overcomes challenges of its political and economic transition, the focus of cooperation shifted to promoting transparency and openness in public organizations, anticorruption, policy advocacy for decentralization, electoral reform for increased representation, political empowerment of women and access to legal services for the poor.

Gender Equality and Women's Empowerment

UNDP Mongolia mainstreams its gender equality and women’s empowerment across its program areas of Governance, Natural Resources Management and Climate Change with a focus on women in decision-making, women in civil service, combating gender-based violence (GBV), women and eco-tourism, women’s economic empowerment. This will mean that women as well as men can influence, participate in and benefit from development efforts.
