Gendered Voices - Climate Change Matters: Women Engaged in Renewable Energy
April 1, 2021
Energy is not gender-neutral. Globally, women make up only 22% of the energy sector workforce, and in Mauritius, the figure is just 5% among 2,000 employees. This gender disparity spans renewable energy sectors, including solar, wind, hydro, and biomass.
This edition of UNDP Mauritius’s Gendered Voices Newsletter examines the barriers women face in the renewable energy sector and their role in combating climate change. It emphasizes addressing gender needs to empower women and ensure no one is left behind in building a green economy. Key measures include mainstreaming gender, increasing female employment, closing gender pay gaps, and implementing policies to ensure women’s equitable access to renewable energy for homes and businesses.
