August 2, 2022

YAB Prime Minister of Malaysia

MALAYSIA INNOVATES SUMMIT 2022

I have officiated the Malaysia Innovates Summit 2022, a platform for interaction that brings together local innovators and their invention. The platform also provide space for local innovators to discuss and nurture new ideas related to research, development, commercialisation and innovation (R&D&C&I), which play an important role in accelerating socioeconomic development of Keluarga Malaysia.

The Economic Planning Unit under the Prime Minister’s Department (EPU, JPM) in partnership with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) together with seven ministries i.e Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI), Ministry of Higher Education (KPT), Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industries (MAFI), Ministry of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives (KUSKOP), Ministry of Housing and Local Government (KPKT), Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources (KETSA), and the Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS) collaborated to make the summit today a success, focusing on:

Fostering discussions on commercialisation and innovation focusing particularly on investment initiatives, network expansion and providing space for the development of new ideas towards boosting R&D&C&I activities.

Providing space and opportunities to encourage inclusive collaboration through the sharing of information, experience and best practices among government agencies, the general public, the private sector, start-up companies, technology entrepreneurs, the scientific communities and innovators from the grassroots and B40 income group.

This summit is based on the three main themes that are in line with the current socio-economic needs of the country, namely Sustainable Agriculture and Food Security, Sustainable Communities and Green Cities, and Sustainable Business.

These themes are also in line with support the objectives of the 12th Malaysia Plan (12th MP), which aims to achieve the high-income nation status by the year 2025.

Digitalization, technology adoption and innovation are all essential to achieve sustainable economic growth. Therefore, for the purpose of supporting the development of innovation in Malaysia from 2021 to 2022, which is during the Rolling Plan 1 and 2 under the 12th MP, the Government has approved 99 R&D&C&I projects and programs which costs RM5.6 billion in total

The government will also increase commercialization and spur innovation to produce more high added value industry-based products and solutions. For this purpose, all R&D&C&I activities will be aligned with national priorities. Emphasis will be given on commercialisation aspect by ensuring that at least 50 percent of the total R&D expenditure is for experimental development research.

I believe this summit will provide opportunities to encourage multi-stakeholder collaboration through the sharing of information, experience and best practices among Government agencies, general public and the private sector. This effort will further strengthen the ecosystem to encourage investment towards various high-impact R&D&C&I.
