Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan – On April 12-14, 2021, representatives of the media and non-governmental organizations of Kyrgyzstan will take part in the data lab “Climate Change: Figures and Meanings."

The Data Lab is aimed at improvement the professional level of journalists in covering the issues of climate change, climate security, as well as the coverage of the upcoming conference of the parties on climate change, COP26. During the training, participants will improve their skills in using tools for working with data sets in the field of climate change, their visualization, as well as with the forms and formats of information processing so that it is interesting and accessible to readers.

Increases in temperature, longer hot seasons, drought and increased torrential rains are all impacts of the climate change, and today the people of Kyrgyzstan should be aware of these processes and its consequences. The media and civil society play the role of mediator in the delivery of climate change information in numbers and facts, especially at the local level, where such information is lacking. In this regard, this training is also aimed at regional media and non-governmental organizations.

As part of the data lab, 24 media and non-governmental organizations will get answers to questions as "Why is climate change happening and what will happen next?", "What do the data say and how to tell about it?", "How to create news based on data?", and during the practical sessions will be able to formulate and plan content on climate change, and trainers will mentor their future publications on climate change.

The "Climate Change: Figures and Meanings" date is part of the Central Asia Climate Security Policy Action Project, supported by the UK Government and implemented by the UNDP in Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.

This project promotes regional cooperation on climate policy and effective climate diplomacy, positioning countries of their climate agenda based on evidence-based commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and enhances the negotiation skills of national delegations to the 26th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Change climate.

The 26th session of the UN Climate Change Conference will be held on 1-12 November this year in Glasgow, UK. This conference is currently the highest negotiating body for the implementation of the provisions of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the Kyoto Protocol (KP) and the Paris Agreement.
