FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), in partnership with the Ministry of Youth Affairs and the Armed Forces Technical and Education College (AFTEC), has launched an orientation programme to prepare the country’s next generation of electric vehicle (EV) drivers.

With an initial fleet of 50 electric vehicles set to operate in Freetown, Sierra Ride is bringing together green technology, youth employment and practical skills development to reshape urban mobility and create new livelihood opportunities.

But putting electric vehicles on the road is only part of the ambition. Building the skills to operate them safely, efficiently and sustainably is equally important.

Representing the Minister of Youth Affairs, Director James Sandy described Sierra Ride as more than a transport initiative. He emphasised its potential to empower young people to earn sustainable incomes, develop financial independence and participate in an evolving green economy.

The programme also brings an important dimension of civil-military cooperation. Through AFTEC, the technical expertise and training infrastructure of the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces are being leveraged to develop skills that respond to civilian employment needs.

During the orientation, RSLAF Training Commander Issa Bangura outlined the two-week training programme, which will introduce participants to electric vehicle operations, road safety, basic maintenance and responsible vehicle management.

The training will also emphasise financial literacy and responsible income management, encouraging participants to see their new skills as a foundation for longer-term economic opportunities.

For the 100 prospective drivers, the programme offers an opportunity to enter an emerging industry. For Sierra Leone, it represents an investment in the people and technical capabilities needed to make sustainable transportation a reality.

As Sierra Ride prepares to hit the streets of Freetown, the message is clear: the future of mobility is not only electric. It is driven by people.
