UNDP Rome Centre

About us

Open grassy field with a long glass-walled pavilion, surrounded by trees under a blue sky.

UNDP Rome Centre for Climate Action and Energy Transition works with countries and partners to advance climate action, expand access to sustainable energy and create opportunities for young people. Through international cooperation, technical expertise and innovative partnerships, we help turn shared ambitions into concrete action.

A partnership built for action

The UNDP Rome Centre for Climate Action and Energy Transition is a partnership between the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Italian Ministry of Environment and Energy Security (MASE).

Based in Rome, the Centre brings together international expertise, institutional partnerships and country-driven solutions to address some of today's most pressing development challenges. Our work focuses on accelerating climate action, supporting a just and inclusive energy transition, and empowering young people to contribute to a more sustainable future. By connecting countries with knowledge, resources and partners, we help bridge the gap between development priorities and their implementation.

Our Journey

From its origins as an initiative focused on climate and sustainable development in Africa, the Rome Centre has evolved into a platform for international cooperation, connecting Italy and UNDP around shared priorities.

The Centre's origins date back to June 2017, when the Communiqué of the G7 Environment Ministers' Meeting in Bologna supported the proposal to establish an Africa Centre for Climate and Sustainable Development (ACSD) in Rome.

The Centre was officially inaugurated on 28 January 2019, following an agreement between the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the then Italian Ministry of Environment, Land and Sea, now the Ministry of Environment and Energy Security (MASE).

Since December 2022, UNDP's presence in Italy has expanded significantly, reflecting the growing alignment between UNDP's development priorities and Italy's commitment to international cooperation. This partnership was further strengthened through UNDP's engagement in major international events hosted by Italy, including the International Conference on Development and Migration in July 2023, the Italy-Africa Summit in January 2024 and the Italian G7 Presidency in 2024, particularly on climate, energy and environmental priorities.
