Support to sustainable and climate-friendly forest management practices in Georgia

Summary

UNDP and the Government of Japan support Georgia in the transition to sustainable forest management, aiming to protect forests from degradation and unsustainable lodging, and increase their capacity to capture greenhouse gas emissions.

The initiative contributes to Georgia’s commitment under its updated Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) - increasing the carbon capturing capacity of forests by 10% by 2030 compared to the 2015 level and reducing 50-57% of its total GHG emissions with international support by 2030 compared to 1990.

The project is part of UNDP’s flagship Climate Promise initiative responding to its global pillars:

  1. Clean energy and net-zero pathways, driving investment in clean energy to provide biofuels harvested from sustainable forest management practices to local communities, and
  2. Scaling up adaptation, resilience, and disaster risk reduction tools and ensuring that no one is left behind

what we do

In partnership with national counterparts, the Ministry of Environment Protection and Agriculture of Georgia and the National Forestry Agency, and Japanese partners where possible, the project pilots the Business Service Yard concept in Mtskheta Municipality to engage the local communities in sustainable forest management, create easy access to renewable energy sources and assist 43,000 people to explore environment-friendly solutions that boost employment and create sustainable livelihoods.

expected results

  • A piloted Business Service Yard with necessary infrastructure and logistical capacity in the Mtskheta municipality
  • Public awareness campaign held in the Mtskheta municipality on the importance of sustainable forest management, Business Service Yard and energy efficiency
  • Socially vulnerable households equipped with energy-efficient technologies and trained on the use of energy-efficient technologies
  • Foresters provided with the necessary equipment (personal safety kits, fire extinguishers and quadricycles) for sustainable management of forest and Business Service Yard and trained on the use of the equipment
