The second UN Ocean Conference comes at a critical time as the world is seeking to address many of the deep-rooted problems exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, which will require major structural transformations and common shared solutions that are anchored in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
- To mobilize action, the conference seeks much needed science-based innovative solutions.
- Solutions for a sustainably managed ocean involve green technology and innovative uses of marine resources using integrated, ecosystem-based approaches. They include addressing the main threats to the health, ecology and economy of the ocean – climate change, pollution, unsustainable fishing, invasive species and the loss of marine habitats and biodiversity. Each of these threats is ultimately rooted in weak ocean governance at various geographic scales.
- Exploring interlinkages between SDG 13 on climate and SDG 14 on the ocean in advancing the 2030 Agenda and Paris Agreement.

“Urban Rivers” or “Rios Urbanos”, a 27-minute documentary premiere in Lisbon. The documentary reveals the rich biodiversity and the levels of pollution in the estuaries of two important rivers in Portugal, Tejo and Sado, while exploring the daily life of people and their livelihood and experience. |
“Rios Urbanos” will be presented by Ricardo Gomes, Brazilian marine biologist who directed and produced the documentary. Ciencia Viva (Government of Portugal), and UNDP, have supported the making of the documentary. The launch of 'Urban Rivers' will be followed by a debate on the delicate interactions between the urban environment, the rivers, and the sea. No previous registration required. |
