Background

The Bi-Communal Technical Committees were established by the leaders of the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities under the auspices of the United Nations, to address issues that affect the day-to-day life of people, through encouraging and facilitating greater interaction and understanding between the two communities.

Project Summary

The overall objective of the “Support facility to the Bi-Communal Technical Committees” facility is to support the work of the Technical Committees established by the two leaders in the context of the talks, with the provision of financial, conceptual, and operational support in the preparation and realization of small, ad-hoc activities as well as more substantive projects and interventions in support of confidence building measures.

THIS PROJECT IS FUNDED BY THE EUROPEAN UNION

Since 2012 approximately €19.9 million of European Union funds have been provided by the European Commission to implement the priorities of the Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage, for the islandwide preservation of Cyprus’ cultural heritage. This makes the EU the biggest contributor to the work of the Committee.

Objectives:

  • Support and enable the Technical Committees to adopt island-wide and intercommunal solutions for issues of common concern and to implement these in a strategic manner;
  • Strengthen the capacity of the Technical Committees as effective inter-communal mechanisms for identifying, planning and implementing projects/initiatives that foster mutual understanding and cooperation.

Expected results:

  • Capacity building for cultural heritage management and maintenance
  • Support to bi-communal Technical Committees’ initiatives
