Issue Brief - Ending Poverty by 2030

March 28, 2016

At the heart of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is a commitment “to eradicate poverty everywhere, in all its forms and dimensions by 2030”. By adopting the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, world leaders moved past poverty reduction and set out to achieve sustainable development that "leaves no one behind".

This UNDP Issue Note takes quick stock of the state of poverty worldwide and elaborates three challenges UNDP considers vital for the success of efforts to eradicate poverty in countries south and north. It suggests UNDP’s approach and role in supporting countries to: i) overcome slow and job-less growth; ii) end conflict and reduce vulnerability; iii) curb inequalities and exclusion. The Note was used to inform the preparation of Member States participating in UNDP’s 50th Anniversary Ministerial discussion on poverty eradication.
