Extractive Industries for Sustainable Development Activity Report 2015

In 2015, UNDP had an active year supporting countries to better manage their extractive resources in a way that benefits sustainable development. 28 UNDP Country Offices have developed work on Extractive Industries. In addition, 9 regional and 6 global activities, including a high-level dialogue in New York on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the extractive sector as well as a South-South learning conference in Bangkok have completed the field-based work. About US$18 million have been mobilised, mainly from the European Union and Sweden. The team also produced 10 key knowledge products and captured emerging trends in a series of blogs. The knowledge products include a novel Index that ranks countries according to their dependence on non-renewable resources and a mapping of the mining sector and its links with specific SDGs. Externally, UNDP's work benefited from partnerships with 12 organisations, such as the African Union, the International Finance Corporation (IFC), the World Economic Forum, the Secretariat of the Pacific Community, UN Women and UNEP.
