Policy Brief: Tobacco Control as an Accelerator for the Sustainable Development Goals in Myanmar

March 10, 2020

Tobacco costs lives, causes economic loss, contributes to environmental degradation, and poses significant threats to sustainable development. In Myanmar, 64,033 people died from tobacco related diseases in 2016, 56 percent of those under the age of 70. Tobacco is one of the biggest public health threats, and not only deprives Myanmar of health and wealth, but threaten national development. UNDP, WHO FCTC, WHO Myanmar and the Ministry of Health and Sports Myanmar released this joint policy brief, which highlights how a continued focus on strengthening tobacco control will help accelerate Myanmar's effort towards achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It explores linkages between tobacco control and the SDGs, identifying issues and opportunities to deliver mutual benefits across the SDG agenda.
