Safer Communities through Disaster Risk Reduction in Development

Summary

This report presents findings of the final evaluation of the Safer Communities through Disaster Risk Reduction programme. The programme was designed to support the Government of Indonesia develop new approaches and capabilities for disaster management by focusing on risk reduction and not just response. The overall objective of the project was to promote a culture of safety in Indonesia by making disaster risk reduction “a normal part of the development process”.

 

The report’s findings are based on analysis of relevant documents and interviews with approximately 100 project stakeholders and beneficiaries. Overall the evaluation team finds the proigramme to have been highly effective in supporting the new disaster risk reduction agenda in Indonesia, especially at the national level where the project has made critical contributions to the new policy, legal and regulatory frameworks for disaster management.
