Practical solutions at the intersection of climate action, peace, and security in the Liptako-Gourma region

The Liptako-Gourma region, encompassing parts of Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger, faces severe challenges exacerbated by climate change, resource scarcity and competition, often undermining regional stability. In 2024, under the Regional Climate Security Programme, UNDP commissioned a groundbreaking study to explore the critical connections between climate, peace, and security in this region. The study identifies over 20 actionable solutions – including innovations in climate-resilient agriculture, the adoption of renewable energy, and community-based mediation initiatives. They showcase the transformative potential of climate action to foster peace, stability, and resilience in vulnerable regions. Backed by robust evidence, the study provides policymakers, development actors, and local stakeholders with clear, practical recommendations to address pressing challenges.
