Chapters

Introduction: A Time to Come Together (137 KB)
A series of global shocks, including the food, energy, climate change and economic and financial crises, are threatening to slow down, or reverse, progress toward achieving the MDGs. Now more than ever the international community – including UNDP – must live up to its commitments made to the world’s poor to ensure that their needs are not forgotten and their voices are heard.

UNDP On the Ground: Fulfilling Commitments (114 KB)
UNDP will stay the course as spelled out in the UNDP Strategic Plan 2008-2011 and focus its efforts on reducing poverty, promoting democratic governance, supporting crisis prevention and recovery efforts and achieving sustainable development results in energy and environment, efforts that are crucial to achieving the MDGs.

Poverty Reduction (199 KB)
Poverty reduction lies at the heart of UNDP’s role as the UN’s global development network. In 2008, UNDP initiated or scaled up a number of programmes addressing poverty, always in consultation with the people and governments who it serves. UNDP also stepped up its support of MDG monitoring as well as coordinating global and local MDG achievement efforts.

Democratic Governance (454 KB)
The effects of poor democratic governance are inextricably linked to poverty, HIV and AIDS, civil wars and climate change. UNDP has a number of initiatives that address governance issues on both a broad regional level as well as national and local levels.

Crisis Prevention and Recovery (408 KB)
As the world enters a new, volatile period, strengthening national capacities for crisis prevention and management will become increasingly crucial. UNDP has a central role to play in assisting countries in preventing and mitigating the effects of crises, as well as in promoting recovery.

Environment and Sustainable Development (111 KB)
In 2008, UNDP endorsed a new climate change strategy, which supports the capacity of developing countries to make informed policy and investment decisions to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions, reduce poverty and accelerate the achievement of the MDGs.

UNDP and the UN System (173 KB)
As the manager of the Resident Coordinator system, UNDP, with its UN partners, remains fully committed to ensuring that the UN development system works together more coherently. In 2008, UNDP also contributed to administer resources on behalf of the UN through the Multi-Donor Trust Fund Office, which administers a portfolio that has grown to US$3.79 billion and encompasses 23 funds.

Inside UNDP: Living up to Internal Commitments (141 KB)
UNDP must continue to improve its efforts at bringing a high level of coherence, focus, accountability and transparency to all of its processes, while also keeping in mind that it is people, and not institutions, who bring about human development. Internal mechanisms including the UNDP Strategic Plan 2008-2011, the Accountability System and the Human Resources Strategy 2008-2011 are all internal commitments that aid UNDP to meet its external goals.

UNDP Resources (67 KB)
A breakdown of contributions to UNDP, as well as UNDP’s support to non-bilateral aid delivery.
