Microfinance in Liberia
Improving the economic situation of women is key to peace-building efforts in Liberia following a civil war that tore the country apart and left 75 percent of its people in extreme poverty. UNDP, with funds from Denmark, has set up revolving microloans that provide funds to women entrepreneurs, many of whom are heads of households. Helping Indigenous Paraguayans with Food Security
In Paraguay, UNDP is working with an indigenous group, the Mbya Guarani people, on projects that aim to diversify their diets and promote ecologically sustainable use of their lands while at the same time respecting the community’s traditions and fiercely guarded privacy. Protecting the Environment and Livelihoods in Yemen
In Yemen, UNDP worked with local people and the Government in planning for the rehabilitation of a valuable and fragile ecosystem, the Aden Wetlands. Along with promoting new environmental legislation as well as awareness of the Wetlands’ importance in Yemen’s economy and environment, the project focused on sustainable livelihoods for the people who live there. For example, the project revived indigenous practices such as soap, vinegar and seed button production. View Video | Behind the Lens
