The UN under one roof: the Cape Verde experience

In 2005, the first joint UN country programme was developed in Cape Verde. For the first time, the UN team in that country agreed on a common programme document and a single action plan reflecting the priorities and objectives of UNDP, the UN Population Fund (UNFPA), the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF), and the World Food Programme (WFP). Bringing UN programmes under one banner not only helps harmonize budgets and activities, it also strengthens the UN’s support to Cape Verde by avoiding the duplication of projects and identifying new areas for complementary interventions on the ground. This new model is also expected to lead to a reduction in transaction costs both for the UN joint office and for its national partners. This unified approach constitutes an important step towards a more integrated and coherent UN system. Twenty joint offices are being planned in other countries.
