Key strategic focus
  • Global Compact (GC)
    • Inter-agency initiative “to challenge businesses around the world to take greater responsibility in society and act upon a set of universally recognized principles”
    • “Important framework for initiating and building action-oriented relationships between business and other sectors, including governments, civil society and the UN”
    • Main components of framework are: outreach and advocacy; policy dialogue; partnership projects and initiatives; learning
  • Growing Sustainable Business (GSB) is anchored in GC
    • Facilitates business-led “enterprise solutions” to poverty in advancement of the MDGs, where “profit and incentives justify real investment and financial sustainability is embedded in the design”
    • Leverages “UNDP’s impartiality, its convening power, and its ability to facilitate and coordinate, and to create space at country level for interested stakeholders to come together”
    • Delivery mechanism consists of:
      • A full time broker for each country, who acts as a convener and intermediary, and helps identify, develop and support specific projects
      • Research Platform: Co-funding with participating companies for socio-economic and feasibility studies informing business plans
      • Technical Assistance Platform: Help prepare local stakeholders, including entrepreneurs, CSOs and government, to play a role in the implementation of a GSB project
  • Launches of “Unleashing Entrepreneurship” at country and regional level
  • Brokerage of sustainable pro-poor investments, including activities such as:
    • PPPs for service delivery
    • Promotion of investments, and new business models
    • Facilitation of market access, deployment of technology, and promotion of enabling business environment
