Analyzing a Country Situation
Entry point A and key issues
PSD’s entry point in the UN programming cycle
  • The common country assessment are increasingly concentrated on issues regarding the realization of the MDGs
  • Domestic PSD issues are relevant in two contexts:
    • As a root cause and possible solution space for MDG 1
    • As a part of the global partnership in MDG 8, or to help achieve other goals such as 6 and 7
  • At this step, the focus is on determining whether domestic PSD potentially should be short-listed as a challenge and priority of UN development co-operation

Key questions

  • Is economic growth driven by few sectors and commodity groups?
  • Is unemployment a major issue?
  • Do people have access to basic goods and services? Are there missing markets?
  • Is the economy facing specific constraints to growth that involve private sector players?
  • Are there broader development issues that could potentially be addressed through domestic private sector development?
