Social safety net

A social safety net is a collection of actions by the state to protect vulnerable people from falling into extreme poverty because of shocks to the household income. Examples of social safety net programs include welfare, unemployment benefits, universal healthcare, emergency employment programmes and social transfers to households such as food subsidies.
