United Nations Trust Fund for Human Security
I The United Nations Trust Fund for Human Security (UNTFHS) was established at the United Nations in March 1999 on the basis of the contribution from the Government of Japan. The total amount received from Japan by March 2005 was about $256 million, making the Fund the largest of its kind established in the UN. As of 31 March 2005, UNTFHS had funded more than $150 million in total for more than 120 projects.
The objective of the trust fund is to support projects implemented by UN agencies which address various threats to human lives, livelihoods and dignity currently facing the international community. Concrete activities to be supported include poverty, environmental degradation, conflicts, landmines, refugee problems, illicit drug and infectious diseases such as HIV/AIDS. Only organizations in the UN system may request support from UNTFHS.ver the past several years, UNDP has made significant progress in strengthening its international partnerships and marshalling the resources it needs to support progress toward the Millennium Development Goals. In early 2000, UNDP created the Bureau for Resources and Strategic Partnerships to coordinate and nurture its working relationships with donor countries, civil society organizations, international financial institutions, regional development banks, the private sector and rest of the UN system. The result is that UNDP is better prepared than ever before to help developing countries attract human and financial assistance and use it effectively.
The Human Security Unit in the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs(OCHA), established in September 2004 to place Human Security in the mainstream of UN activities, is entrusted with the management of UNTFHS.
